Legal Issues and Publishing an Ebook
I am not an attorney, so I can't advise you in this matter except to say that anyone can sue you for anything, which is why it is always a good idea to have business insurance and understand your coverage.
Make sure that your ebook is written in your own words and that you are not borrowing from the work of others without giving proper credit. There are a lot of people in this world today who think that it's okay to lift the work of other authors or to paraphrase what someone else has said. Make sure your work is original.
If it is an ebook about a highly controversial subject or if you are making claims about certain people in your book, be sure to check and recheck your facts. You may want to have your attorney check your work. When I wrote my first ebook, I included a story about someone that did not shed a positive light on them. I was concerned about the possibility that this person might sue me, so I consulted with my lawyer at the time. His advice: talk about the person, his title and what he did without actually naming him.
Consider taking my class Make Your Ebook Sell which will be offered in Spring 2010. Although we won't be covering liability or legalities, you will learn how to write an ebook that sells by building the marketing into your book.
